Speech-Language Pathologist - FTT

Therapy services at the BC Centre for Ability provides community based Autism Assessments to children referred through the BCAAN program at Sunny Hill Health Centre. The Speech Language Pathologist works as part of a team, alongside a Pediatrician, to provide assessment, diagnostic and intervention services to children presenting with developmental delays. Departmental assignments are subject to operational and departmental needs.

Responsibilities

Provides assessment, diagnostic and intervention services to children using advanced level clinical skills and knowledge in the specified program area and within the full range of communication and swallowing disorders (as required). Utilizes processes such as the administration and interpretation of standardized assessment tools, detailed history taking, informal observation/evaluation procedures and consultation with other professionals to ensure consideration of additional factors (e.g. cognitive factors, mental health, medical status, environmental influences) that may affect assessment, subsequent diagnosis and recommendations for treatment.

Provides counselling and psychoeducation to families and other relevant caregivers to understand the nature, treatment and prognosis of the specific speech and language diagnoses and the relationship of these diagnoses to the individual’s developmental, cognitive and/or mental health presentation/profile.

Collaborates within the specified program/inter-professional team, speech and language pathology discipline, demonstrated by participating in activities such as evaluating clinical treatment practices, guidelines and protocols and promoting excellence in practice and treatment team in partnership with the team at BCAAN and other community based assessment teams.

Provides orientation, guidance, and collegial information or demonstration of work methods and processes to others including peers, new staff, and students. Provides instruction and/or supervision to students; evaluates and provides feedback on student progress. Provides work direction to support staff.

Provides recommendations based on clinical assessment findings and diagnoses and communicates these findings through informal and formal inter-professional meeting structures, family conferences and verbal and written reporting.

Assess the oral motor skills required for drinking and eating (as required)

Use a coaching approach with families and team members to educate and implement therapeutic programs based on family goals

Use Evidence Based Practice and Family Centered Practice to guide decision making when developing goals and therapeutic programs.

Maintain up to date records that meet agency and regulatory body requirements

Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and community partners.

Participate in staff meetings, case reviews, medical liaison meetings, and in-services

Undertake additional responsibilities as directed

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology

Completion of BCAAN ADOS-2 course through PHSA is a requirement

Experience working in pediatrics &/or in a community-based program is an asset

Training in Motivational Interviewing or Brief Action Planning an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Practices in accordance with the International Classification of Function and F-words of childhood development with a commitment to inclusive practice and family centered care

A basic understanding of feeding/swallowing difficulties and management is considered an asset

Proven collaboration, communication and consultation skills

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Proven organization and time management skills are required

Ability to adapt to change and embrace new technology

Competency using a virtual platform, electronic client record system and word processing software

Working Conditions & Provisos Must be registered with CHCPBC (includes Criminal Record Check)

Valid driver’s license with reliable use of car for work with business insurance

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position

Works hours are generally 8:30am-4:30pm
